Watch for Dehydration

Aging not only affects appetite, it also makes us naturally less thirsty. Older adults may have trouble recognizing thirst, as well, which can result in dehydration. In fact, dehydration is a common cause of hospitalization among seniors. It can lead to bladder infections, constipation, confusion, and falls. Signs of dehydration include:

dizziness and headaches

fatigue

dryness of the mouth, eyes, and lips

infrequent urination

dark, strong-smelling urine

In severe cases of dehydration, a person requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of extreme dehydration may include:

rapid heartbeat

sagging skin

sunken eyes

seizures

blood in vomit or feces

To guard against dehydration, be sure to provide plenty of liquids throughout the day and encourage consumption. In addition to water, fluids may include tea, milk, fresh fruit juices, ice pops, and flavored water. (Avoid sugary and caffeinated beverages.) Many seniors think they are getting enough fluids because they sip throughout the day; however, it takes 7–8 glasses of fluid to maintain proper hydration. You can try filling a large container (64-oz) with water in the morning and having the person you are caring for drink from it all day, which allows both of you to measure intake.
